We are now post-election, post-Halloween, and in a blink of an eye Thanksgiving will be here. As we continue the sprint towards the end of 2024, about this time now is when you will start seeing SEO predictions for 2025 and Top SEO Trends for 2025 being published like Nostradamus.
In 2024, the SEO Content Goblins decided to come up with a list of SEO Questions going into 2025 - instead of making SEO Predictions, and speculating on SEO Trends for 2025, etc...
SEO had a wild end of 2023 with a half-dozen confirmed Alogorithm Updates from Google - and that volatility extended into a crazy - and transformative year for the SEO Industry in 2024.
High Level 2024 SEO Re-Cap:
3 Major Broad Core Algorithm Updates, and a couple Spam Updates
Google's release of AI Overviews outside of labs
Release of AIO's to non-logged in users in August
Expansion of AIOs to more countries globally
OpenAI's release of a search engine within ChatGPT
Explosion of Reddit visibility on the SERP
Google Anti-Trust Lawsuit
Google API Leak
This is just what the SEO Content Goblins can remember off the top of their hairy little heads.
Throw in frustrations that SEO's, businesses, and just general users had with the quality of Google Search Results in 2024, with laughable AIO responses - sometimes down right dangerous for medical search queries.
The Search Landscape in 2024 became even more fragmented - it's not just "Google" Search Engine Optimization - users are searching for information and content on various platforms.
Users are going to Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. Users are experimenting more with Microsoft Bing CoPilot, and Chat GPT, Perplexity and so-on. Results are not just the standard traditional "Top 10 Blue Organic Links." People do a search for answers to questions, to locate a place for directions, helpful videos, images, etc.
The Days of SEO's doing everything are long gone. SEO is now a big enough and mature enough discipline - that we need to evolve into specializing into: Technical SEO, Local SEO, Video SEO, Image SEO, and now AI Optimization of GEO - Generative Search Optimization, and also even Reddit optimizations.
If the SEO Content Goblins did have to make an SEO prediction for 2025 - and an SEO recommendation - is that the Digital Marketing Industry and SEO's as a collective - need to focus on optimization for multiple organic channels - NOT JUST GOOGLE. We talk about Total SERP ownership in the SEO Industry, that doesn't just mean Google! Business, publishers, etc... need to be able to be able to be seen and found by users across the web.
